4th-7th Royal Dragoon Guards, 12th Battalion KRRC

This black polished granite Memorial was raised in September 2000 at the instigation of local historian Carl Reymen, the town council and local history society in co-operation with the regiments concerned in the battle for the village - Oostham. It commemorates the soldiers killed in the figting to liberate Oostham, carries the legend For Peace and Freedom, bears an engraved poppy spray andi is signed The Creully Club'. The fighting began on the 8th September 1944 as the British advanced northwards beyond the Albert Canal and met the German 3rd Squadron Panzerjager Abteilung. By nightfall, both sides, having each lost two tanks, came to a standstill here as actions involving other units began to swirl around the position. The Germans finally withdrew following the arrival of the Belgian Piron Brigade on 11 September. Beside the stone are the local WW1 and WW2 Memorials and a mass grave of nine Unkowns
