 : Aalst Liberation Memorial, Holland

Aalst Liberation Memorial, Holland

This small dramatic Memorial stands on a plinth in a little park in the middle of Aalst. It depicts three human figures rising from the straightjacket of German occupation. Designed by Karel Zilstra, it was unveiled in September 1994 and the streets around are named after Resistamce Workers. About 600m further north towards Eindhoven is a small stream called the Tongelreep and on 18 September the armoured cars of the Guards were delayed by oppostion from German 88mm weapons. Meanwhile, members of the Squadron HQ, who were waiting in Aalst, were comfortably ensconced with some of them having a haircut in a nearby shop according to an after the battle report
