The Hungarian Admiral is usually referred to by the Hungarian form of Nicholas, his Christian name - Miklos. Horthy became Regent of Hungary in 1920 and his regime was supported by the Nazi government during the 1930s. Relations between the two leaders deteriorated when the war began to go badly for Germany and their mutual distrust grew apace. In March 1944 Hitler sent German troops into Hungary. That summer Horthy attempted to prevent the deportation of Hungarian Jews and in October he negotiated an armistice with the Soviet Union. As a result, Hitler sent Otto Skorzeny into Hungary to discipline Horthy. This he did by kidnapping Horthy's son Miki
