African natives waving to Italian warplanes overhead
Buon Natale means Happy Christmas, and this card was sent to Italy by a soldier of the Italian Expeditionary force based in Tobruk, in December 1937. Italy by this time had large areas of north and north-east Africa under her control -albeit mostly desert - and Mussolini was in the fullest flush of his swaggering role as successful dictator and world statesman. Whether African natives would have genuinely welcomed Italian aeroplanes in the way that the drawing suggests, is very much open to doubt
