Airborne Memorial, Ginkelse Heide, Market Garden

The troops for the airborne assault on the bridge at Arnhem were of two types - those that landed by glider on LZs and those that arrived by parachute onto DZs'. Each demanded space on the ground in order to minimise casualties. Because the area around Arnhem and its western eighbour Oosterbeek was quite built up, several areas to the west had to be used. This one, Drop Zone Y, was the furthest away from the bridge - about 10kms. As the built-up area has grown in post war development Ginkelse Heide (Heath) has become the only one where commemorative parachute drops can be made each year, which they are, on the nearest Saturday to the 17th of September, weather permitting. The Memorial, a pillar carrying the insignia of the KOSB who had held the ground for the paras to arrive, also has the Pegasus badge and is surmounted by a symbolic dove of peace. It was designed by Mrs M. M. Heuff van Oven and was unveiled by General Urquahart on 19 September 1960
