Artists impression of Weimar National Assembly Building

This is an official postcard, issued to commemorate the opening of the Assembly at Weimar when Frederick Ebert was elected as the first President of the new German Republic. Berlin, the traditional capital of Germany, had not been chosen to be the constitutional home of the new Republic because, the month before, there had been a Spartakist uprising there and the city was considered to be unsafe. On the back of the card are three different commemorative stamps, each franked with a date stamp for 8 February 1919, three days before the election vote. The building shown is the old theatre in Weimar, where the assembly was held
