On 6 January 1919 the extreme left, including Karl Liebknechts Spartakists, called for an armed revolution. Almost a quarter of a million people responded, including members of the Peoples Naval Division, which had been formed from the mutinous sailors of Kiel. Badly organised, the rebellion collapsed, although there was street fighting for several days and many of the revolutionaries were summarily executed
