Celebration card - the first Day of the German Labour Front
The first day in May has traditionally been a time to celebrate the changing seasons, and in England in Tudor times it was a public holiday. The International Socialist Congress of 1889 named 1 May as International Labour Day, with a view to establishing it as a national holiday. In Europe, 1 May became associated with the trade unions and when Hitler disbanded the unions in 1933 he replaced them with the German Labour Front.
