Adolf Hitler did not commit his armed forces to a major, face-to=face conflict in Spain as Mussolini did. His efforts were mainly air support. Twenty-six aircraft with their crews were sent to Spain in August 1936. This small force, known as the Legion Condor (LC), expanded into an air arm of considerable size, commanded by General Wolfram von Richthofen, a cousin of the First World War Red Baron'.
