Colonel Plumer's Corps marching to relieve Mafeking
Mafeking was an important railway junction near the Bechuanaland border that was put under siege by the Boers. The defence was Commanded by Lt Colonel Baden-Powell (later of Scouting fame) and eventual relief after 217 days was by Plumer's forces
