Crowd scene forming the word SAAR, Nuremburg
Between his entry into politics and his appointment by Hindenburg, Hitlers aim had been to become Chancellor. Once in that position, he immediately began to place Nazis in all positions of authority. One of his stated longer-term objectives, which had helped to rally the population behind him, was to recover for Germany those territories taken away from her by the Treaty of Versailles. This card shows a superbly staged rally of Hitler Youth during the Party Day period in September 1934. Part of carefully co-ordinated Nazi propaganda, this demonstration was designed to influence the outcome of the Saar voting, which was due just four months later
