Crowds in Berlin celebrating Hitlers election as Chancellor
This official stationary postcard shows a small picture of the rejoicing marchers streaming through the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin on the night of 30 January 1933, the day that Hitler became Chancellor. Torchlight processions went on for many hours, watched by Hitler and Hindenburg. There were many marching songs that echoed across the city from the Tiergarten to the Presidents Palace and among them were Deutschland and the Horst Wessel song. This card was posted on 3 February 1934 and the message (in German) which it carried gives a perfect cameo of life in Germany during the early years of Nazi rule -showing that some Germans, at least, were pleased with life
