Crowds celebrating the Saar vote to join Germany

After Germanys defeat in the First World War, The Saar mining area was ceded to France as part of the war reparations that Germany was required to pay under the Treaty of Versailles. At the end of fifteen years, on 13 January 1935, a plebiscite was held in which the population of the Saar was able to choose whether to become part of Germany. Following much Nazi propaganda and alleged intimidation at the polls, the area cast over 90 per cent of its votes for a return to Germany.
