Dr Edward Benes President of Czechoslovakia
In order to pacify Hitler, Benes had agreed to allow a plebiscite to be held in the Sudetenland. But by the time Chamberlain took the message to Hitler on 21 September the Fuhrer was about to march into Czechoslovakia. In a last-ditch attempt to maintain peace, Chamberlain and Daladier, the French Prime Minister, went to meet Hitler at Munich on 29 September. The most notable absentee at Munich was Edward Benes, the man whose country was to be sacrificed
