Dramatic flying flags of nations supporting Franco
Prominent among the Spanish and revolutionary flags are those of Germany and Italy. Both countries gave massive support to Franco - probably much more than they had originally intended to give when the revolt began. Italy provided mostly fully equipped infantry divisions totalling over 50, 000 men, although her contribution to the air war is said to have exceeded 1, 000 aircraft. Mussolini gained little if anything from his participation in the war. Vast quantities of material were expended, and the Blackshirts suffered some humiliating defeats
