The board is outside the Chateau. Blunden was in the 11th Royal Sussex, camped just outside Vlamertinghe in the preparations for the Third Battle of Ypres. In Undertones of War he describes the preparations for the battle as being as obvious to the enemy as to us - like a circus ground on the eve of a benefit
