Edouard Gerard, first Belgian soldier killed in Normandy
Edouard Gerard was born in Dinant in the north-west of Belgium in 1924 and following the German invasion tried to escape to England but was captured. He was later released under the impression that he was a French Canadian. He joined the Piron Brigade, the Belgian First Infantry Brigade in England and landed with them at Courseulles. He was killed on 16 August 1944 at Sallenelles where there was once a memorial plaque to him - it disappeared in 2009
