General Admiral Dr h.c. Raeder head and shoulders
Erich Raeder was born in Hamburg-Wandsbek in 1876. He joined the navy in 1894 as an officer cadet and passed out as best student of the year'. He had a variety of appointments before the First World War, including a spell on the Royal Yacht, Hohenzollern. In the inter-war years he was Commander-in-Chief of Sea Forces, North Sea, then commanding Admiral in Kiel, and, finally, Chief of the German Navy. Grand Admiral Raeder was sentenced to life imprisoonment at the Nuremberg Trials, but was released from Spandau because of ill health in 1955. He died in 1960
