: Two German sailors on leave

Two German sailors on leave

These two sailors, photographed on shore on 15 April 1944, wear the standard pea jacket (Uberzieher) with ordinary seamen's collar patches. This warm, thick, woolen navy blue jacket, was worn by all ranks as a greatcoat. Underneath they wear the standard pullover. The legend on their winter caps is simply Kriegsgmarine'. The pre-war caps which normally bore the name of a sailor's ship, were all supposed to have been withdrawn when war broke out
