Grand Admiral Doenitz Head of the German Navy
Born in the Berlin suburb of Grunau in 1891, Karl Doenitz came from a non-military Prussian family. During the First World War he served on surface ships and submrines. He was elevated to the rank of Gross (Grand) Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of the Nay in January 1943. In the last days in the Berlin bunker Hitler appointed Doenitz as his successor. Here he is wearing the Knight's Cross with Oakleaves at his throat. On his left breast he wears the Second World War U-boat Badge, the 1939 clasp, the Iron Cross and the First World War U-boat Badge
