Four Grenadier Guardsmen in Nijmegen, Holland

In 1994, Nijmegen held ceremonies to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden. The crossing of the road bridge over the River Waal here was done by the Grenadier Guards whose Memorial Plaque (unveiled by Lord Carrington) is under the arch of the bridge on the southern side. The initial crossing of the bridge was done by Sergeant Peter Robinson in a Sherman Firefly with a troop of Grenadiers around 1830 on Wednesday 20th September, just 10 hours before the tenacious survivors of 2 Para were forced off the bridge at Arnhem. The main advance, however, did not begin until the following day. The four men here, all wearing the Guards Brigade tie are, left to right - Lord Carrington who had been Peter Robinson's squadron second in command; the then British Ambassador; Bill Croft who as a Sergeant troop leader had then recently handed over to Peter Robinson; Sergeant Peter Robinson who led the first four tanks over the bridge and later was awarded the DCM and Valmai Holt of Major and Mrs Holts Battlefield Tours
