Head & shoulders portrait Umberto di Savoia

Umberto was the son of Victor Emmanuel III of the House of Savoy, King of Italy. He commanded Italy's Army of the Alps, attacking France in 1940. The three-pronged invasion by thirty-two Italian divisions, on 21 June, was repulsed by six French divisions, the one bright spot in France's targnished military prowess that year. It could not prevent France's capitulation, however, which officially took place on 25 June 1940
