Headstone of Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse, VC and Bar
Chavasse is buried in Brandhoek New Military Cemetery and his headstone shows two emblems of the Victoria Cross. Doctor Chavasse, one of twin brothers, is the only person to win the VC twice in the First World War. His first citation was for tending wounded under fire on 9/10 August 1916 on the Somme and his second for similar actions over a period until he was wounded on 2 August 1917 near Wieltje. He died on 4 August 1917
