Headstone of Lieutenant Rex Whistler, Normandy
Whistler is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Banneville la Campagne. There are 2, 175 burials mostly from the fighting for Caen and the Falaise Gap. Whistler was killed on 18 July 1944 on his first day in action. Following education at the Slade School of Art, he joined the Welsh Guards Armoured Division at the beginning of the war and continued to work as a professional artist during his service
