Heteren Screaming Eagle Memorial, Holland

Heteren is a small village immediately south of the Rhine about 18km west of Arnhem. Erected on 27 September 1982, the brick Memorial, with a splendid Screaming Eagle badge and flanked by two wooden benches, bears the inscription, The Americans of the 101st Airborne Division fought here for our Liberty Oct-Nov 1944. It has been built of the site of an old Dutch searchlight base constructed in 1939. After the British 1st Airborne Division withdrew from Arnhem-Oosterbeek, fierce fighting continued south of the Rhine until the Spring of 1945. On 2 October 101st AB Division was moved north past the 82nd AB, both formations now acting as infantry, to relieve the British 43rd Divison. The first Americans to arrive here were the 501st PIR on 4 October and the following month the Divisional Commander, General Maxwell Taylor, was slightly wounded while inspecting 101st AB positions along the river bank
