Hitler digging the soil on the first autobahn

The Italian Fascists had introduced their Autostrada in the 1920s and now Hitler, shown on the postcard digging the first spadeful, began the Autobahns. By 1938 over 3, 000 km had been built, and an examination of the routes then covered by the Autobahns, makes it clear that they had another object besides providing employment - they were able to supplement the role of the German railways in providing quick lines of internal communications for Hitlers armed forces.
