Obersalzberg is synonymous with Berchtesgaden (meaning mountain garden), but so strong is the association with the Hitler period, that today Bavarians deliberately refer to the area as Obersalzberg. Visitors flocked to see Hitlers home, first named Haus Wachenfeld, and later Berghof.
