Hitler was fond of Weimar, in whose church he had held his first Reichstag (parliament) after his appointment as Chancellor in 1933. He even had a favourite rendezvous - the Elephant Hotel - and his hero, Frederick the Great, was buried in the town. It was in Weimar that the Republic, which had taken its name from the small Thuringian town, voted to give Hitler total authority to destroy the red (Communist) peril, and thus voted itself out of existence. The occasion here is the 10th anniversary of the NSDAP Congress held at Weimar on 3-5 July 1926
