Hitler shaking hands during a Party Day ceremony

Flags, banners and standards played important roles in Nazi rituals. The Romanesque NSDAP standards, which can clearly be seen here, were probably based on a design drawn up by Hitler himself. As each new local branch or unit of SA or SS was formed, its flag was consecrated in some special ceremony. Ceremonies performed on the main party days in Nuremburg would involve touching the new standards with the Blood Flag, the flag that had been carried during the Putsch of 1923
