: Hitler talking to a group of workers

Hitler talking to a group of workers

Hitler was an excellent propagandist and this card is a fine example of Nazi teamwork. Hoffmann, the photographer, has caught Hitler at such an angle that he appears to be taller than his audience, thus suggesting leadership. There is no doubting that the audience is listening to what Hitler has to say and their rapt attention has been captured in detail by the camera. Brotherly identification with the workers is emphasised by the absence of uniform, and the use of a postcard as a vehicle for the picture is ideal, since most workers used cards in preference to writing letters. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Germany suffered from massive unemployment which, once in power, Hitler began to solve by creating a national labour force (Arbeits-dienst). They were put to work on the new autobahns
