King's Shropshire Light Infantry, Lebisey, Normandy
This Memorial to the 2nd Battalion marks the German front line 6 June to 9 July 1944 during the intense fighting for Caen. The KSLI liberated Breville-Beuville and attacked Lebisy on the afternoon of D-Day. However, the 185th Brigade, of which the Regiment was part, was planned to enter Caen on D Day but would not do so until 43 days later. Here the Union flag is upside down as it so often is, not deliberately but through confusion. This is similar to the confusion of spellings of French village names on British memorials
