Liberators Memorial, Escoville, Normandy
Escoville is inland and east of the River Orne, right in the area allocated to the Special Forces and Commandos, and blocking the route to Caen. The German defence of Caen was stubborn and the whole area required several major assaults at Divisional and higher levels before the city was taken. Escoville was not cleared until mid-July during Operation Goodwood, hence the generalism of the Memorial to British Liberators
