: Liebknecht pointing into a Berlin crowd from a rostrum

Liebknecht pointing into a Berlin crowd from a rostrum

During the strikes that erupted across Germany from early 1918, the extreme left socialist party, known as Spartakists, agitated for the overthrow of the Kaiser by armed revolution. Their leader was Karl Liebknecht. Leibnecht planned to engineer a left-wing coup in Berlin but was pre-empted by the abdication of the Kaiser and the assumption of power by moderate socialist Friedrich Ebert on 9 November 1918. This card was issued after the defeat of Nazi Germany on the Party Day of the German Communist Party, 19 April 1946, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Leibnechts death. It is franked on the reverse by SPD (socialist) and KPD (communist) cancellations. It shows Leibnecht speaking in Berlins Tiergarten in December 1918
