Lieutanant Colonel Otway Memorial, Merville Battery
Terence Otway took Command of the 9th Parachute Battalion in April 1944 with the D-Day task of neutralising the Merville Battery and its guns. This memorial tree is with others around the parking area outside the battery entrance. He decided that the only way to train properly for the assault was to practice on a full scale model, and on a 45 acre site near Newbury he arranged for Royal Engineers to build one. It took seven days and nights to construct, including mock guns, their emplacements and anti-tank ditches. The site, at Walbury Hill, was given a Marker there in 1993
