A man with a sledgehammer attacking al large door

Open the door to Germany!. Issued in early 1921, this card is a typical example of the pictorial propaganda issued by the various political groups jockeying for power and membership. In January the Allies had announced that Germany was expected to pay, as war reparations, the huge sum of 216 billion gold marks. Patriotic organisations - including the Volksbund der Deutschen that issued this card - held protest meetings to which thousands flocked. Hitler was quick to hold his own NSPDAP meetings to build his policy of undermining the Versailles Treaty. In June and July 1921 many citizens militias were disbanded, as well as the Oberland Free Corps, and Hitler, who had taken full control of the Nazi Party on 3 August, found among their dispirited members many recruits for his newly formed SA
