Memorial to 1st (Canadian) Parachute Battalion, Ranville

The 3rd (Canadian) Division landed on Juno Beach in the centre of which is the seaside town of Courseulles. On a Sherman tank salvaged from the sea, are a number of Memorial Plaques, one of which is to the 1st Paras. The 1st was actually the first specialist Canadian Parachute Battalion. On D-Day the Canadian airborne troops landed by glider and by parachute between 0100 and 0145 hours. Their primary task was to blow a number of bridges to prevent German counter attacks from the east. Like their ground-based comrades they achieved their objectives
