Memorial column to Captain Georges Guynemer

Guynemer was Frances most popular air ace. He had 54 kills and was lionised in the French press. In June 1917 with his score at 45 he was awarded the Legion dHonneur. Highly strung and nervous, Guynemer arrived in Flanders to fight in the battle of Third Ypres having had almost two continuous years of combat. An official delegation was sent from Paris to persuade him to take a rest but while they waited to see him on 11 September 1917 he took off and during a dog-fight disappeared over Poelkapelle. The memorial with a stork at the top (Guynemers squadron was known at Les Cigognes) was unveiled in July 1923
