Memorial to Harry Patch, the last British Veteran

This memorial was privately erected by Harry Patch to remember those with whom he served in the 7th Battalion DCLI. It is placed on the edge of the Steenbeek stream across which at dawn, on 16 August 1917, the Battalion attacked and captured the village of Langemarck whose church spire is visible in the back centre of the picture. Harry was present at the unveiling of the memorial in September 2008, his 110th birthday year. The last Veteran, Harry died on 25 July 2009 age 111 years, 1 month, 1 week, 1 day
