Memorial Plaque to Canadian Lieutenant D Bellew VC
Donald Bellew won his VC near here. Born in Bombay in 1882 he was educated at Blundells and Sandhurst and enlisted in the British Columbia Regiment when war broke out. With his sergeant he held a position with two machine guns but, when the sergeant was killed and he ran out of ammunition, he was taken prisoner - but not before he had smashed the guns. He remained a prisoner until 1919 and died on 1 February 1961. His VC, which was in the Royal Canadian Military Institute, was stolen in the 1970s
