Mr Gladstone's stout card
Privately printed postcards began to appear around 1872. All cards were immensly popular, but were considered by many to be vulgar because of the openess of the message. Mr Gladstone made much use of cards but said that Official should be made of stouter board. This stouter Official card was issued on 1 February 1875 and still in use for the Penny Postage Jubilee 1890
