Oberst von Epp wearing Pour le Merite award
Franz Ritter von Epp first came to Hitler's attention in 1919, when his Free Corps unit helped overthrow Munich's soviet government. In March 1933 he was appointed State Commissar of Bavaria after Hitler's narrow majority in the Reichstag elections. Von Epp, who was made honorary SA Obergruppenflihrer, often appeared close to the Fuhrer in photographs - notably during Chamberlain'shistoric visit to Munich in September 1938
