The Italian Fascist Party, the PNF, was founded in 1919 when Benito Mussolini, the man who was to lead the party to its greatest achievements and excesses, was still flirting with socialism. Seeing the emerging force as a tool for his ambition, Mussolini threw in his lot with the Fascists in 1920.
