Josef Goebbels was born in Rheydt, in the Rhineland, of a devout catholic, lower-middle-class family. His mother was of Dutch descent and an habitual rumour was that Goebbels had some Javanese blood. If true this could explain his dark eyes and hair, which, with his small stature (just over 1.5 m) (5 ft) and club foot (which resulted from childhood polio), made him the antithesis of the ideal Aryan - tall and blonde.
