Postcard stamped & flown on airship Graf Zeppelin

Graf Zepplin was a formidable symbol of German engineering skill. Within a few weeks of her first flight in 1928, she began a regular commercial service that was to last for more than eight years. Her total flying hours exceeded 17, 000, she travelled over 1.6 million km (1 million miles) and carried some 13, 000 fare-paying passengers. Although designed and operated purely as a commercial craft, she provided valuable training in airframe construction for those who would later build the Luftwaffe. The figure on the card is Heinrich von Stephan, the centenary of whose birth in 1931 is the reason for the card's publication. Stephan is credited with being the invengtor of the postcard, and first suggested the idea in 1865
