President Hindenburg on his death bed
This magnificent black-bordered card shows the President on his death bed lying in state. The old soldier had always preferred iron cots and the simple frame can be clearly seen. He died at 9 a.m. on 2 August 1934 at his estate in Neudeck in East Prussia. Hitler had visited him the day before, and seeing that the Presidents death was imminent, flew back to Berlin. Just three hours after Hindenburg died Hitler declared himself Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor. That same day, all the armed forces swore a personal oath to Hitler, promising to die at his command if need be. Adolf Hitler was now the complete warlord, the absolute dictator of Germany
