The Royal Engineers Evacuation Memorial

In the final days of Operation Market Garden, the beleagured British forces left north of the Rhine at Oosterbeek, west of Arnhem, were evacuated across the river in an way that smacked strongly of the British withdrawal from Gallipoli during WW1. In an evacuation named Berlin, dozens of crossings were made in small boats by British and Canadian Engineers under heavy German fire. Over 2, 000 troops were rescued between around 2200 hours on the 25th and 0545 hours on the 26th of September 1944. They landed in the area where the Monument stands. It is of polished granite and shows the badges of both the British and Canadian Engineers plus a line sketch of the crossings. In gold letters is the legend, They were just whispers and shadows in the night'. In the background can be seen the Arnhem railway bridge
