Rohm was an ex.-First World War Company Commander, whose cheek had been scarred and whose nose had been modified in active service, with whom Hitler felt a strong soldier's kinship. He became Commander of the SA in 1920 and was defended by Hitler when attacked by the socialist press for his homosexual practices
