: Sint Michielsgestel's Memorial to shot civilians

Sint Michielsgestel's Memorial to shot civilians

This area was not cleared of the Germans until the end of October 1944 and during that period, following Operation Market Garden and subsequent fighting with the 51st Highland Division, the Germans shot many civilians that they suspected of being spies. Not far away is the Concentration Camp at Vught and the influence of the callous regime there was felt here. This Memorial was erected in 1994, the 40th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden, the first year of the major Commemorations of the Liberation as it spread across Europe. The twisted, suffering features of the figure match those of Haim Kern's Memorial to the Dead of the Chemin des Dames in France
