When Hitler and Ludendorff marched into the Centre of Munich at the head of some 3, 000 NSDAP followers on the morning of 9 November 1923, they imagined it to be the beginning of a National Socialist revolution. It was not to be. They were fired upon by the police, and the marchers scattered in all directions. Hitler fell when Scheubner-Richter, with whom he had linked arms, was shot dead. Goering, too, was injured. Ludendorff, however, kept on marching until he reached the open vaulted arches of the Feldherrnhalle, erected in honour of great military heroes.
