The war in Spain between the left-wing Republicans and Franco's right-wing Nationalists dragged on for three years. The governments of Franco's two friendly dictators recognised his regime in November 1936 and supported him through to final victory. For the Germans it was an opportunity to practise their armed forces in modern warfare and to develop the concept of ground and air cogoperation between tanks and aeroplanes that produced the lightning war - blitzkrieg
